In 2006 we founded studio DRIFT with the vision of creating design that reacts to and questions human behavior. We are curious about the future, not only the new technologies that are changing design, but also the evolutionary developments in nature and human culture. We strive to find the perfect combination of knowledge and intuition, science fiction and nature, fantasy and interactivity. Our goal is to create a dialogue between the viewer and the objects we create, embodied in tangible objects that refer to realities that are often impenetrable and difficult to understand.

In this time of information overload and exaggerated senses, we hope that our work emphasizes the metaphysical quality of human sensations, establishes a point of balance in the midst of the contradictions of daily life, stresses immaterial, spiritual and emotional values. We are searching for balance in our Communication Age.

We bring these feelings and new (digital)technologies into real life through our work. and because of our goals, light has been one of our favorite mediums, light expresses emotions in a very direct way.

We have a great curiosity about what the future might bring.

COUNT SHEEP

Count Sheep is a filmprojection made for a building in Eindhoven. This animation is about Lonneke's fantasy of what is happening behind the blind walls of this business premise. The film is projected on the building, but the only way to see it is within the boundaries of your own shadow.
You never see the whole animation at once. You have to walk up and down the wall. Together you'll see more.

U WOOD C

Many children spend too much time inside the house using computers. Social contacts are often by sms or msn. Children don’t develop the social and creative skills they need anymore.
U Wood C stimulates kids to play outside. These toolboxes use the wannahave image of a skateboard to create a trend in building huts. The box provides only the most necessary tools for building wooden constructions, which stimulates creativity and inventiveness. A new healthy trend is created. Playing outside becomes hot again!

The toolbox comes in different colours and materials such as the ultimate carbon, so it can be customized in any way you like.

FRAMED

Framed is an inline skate company owned and launched by Ralph Nauta.
Framed designs and produces PATENTED inline stunt skate frames. Normal frames are made of one part ABS, we combined the strength of aluminium with the sliding capability's of ABS.

My frames are more ridged for speed, stronger for hard impacts and the ABS part that wears out can easily be replaced. The ABS part can be quick changed for an other part so you can skate other obstacles. You can choose from anti-rocker, 4-down and freestyle.

Framed has also a clothing line and sponsors the 3 best inline skaters of the Netherlands. Sven Boekhort (former World Champion) Adil Farhouni and Edwin Wijering.

FLY LIGHT

In Autum 2009 we presented our latest interactive light installation during Dutch Design Week
and Glow festival. The FLY LIGHT.

The 160 Glass tubes that lighten up and respond to the viewer are inspired by behaviour from a flock of birds and the fascinating patterns they seem to make random in the air. But actually this behaviour is not so accidental as it looks. Every bird has to keep a safe distance from their neighbour bird in front, below, above and next to it. They all want to fly in the middle of the group and no-one wants to be the leader flying in front. What will happen if an intruder interrupts? This is what the viewer will experience when approaching the Flylight.

We converted this bird-behaviour into a digital DNA and translated it into understandable visualisations with light. Each light is controlled individually, but the behaviour is not programmed to a repeated pattern. Move after move the birds have to choose their way within the borders of the installation. Ultrasonic sensors (like bats) measure the distance between the viewer and installation, so the 'flock' will react different the closer you get to it, or when more people approach it at once. For us, the interesting part is the free will of the flock: does the group attack the viewers one by one, or will it split up and flee?

The development of Flylight started in 2007 and was commissioned by Art Partner and made for Balak Coatings in Belgium in collaboration with technical engineers Luuk van Laake and Klaas van der Molen.

FRAGILE FUTURE III

Fragile Future III tells the story about the amalgamation of nature and technology. In the distant future these two extremes have made a pact to survive. Fragile Future III combines an electrical system with real dandelions in a light sculpture that is predestined to overgrow a surface.

This system is different from the earlier versions because we can build up 3D constructions with the newly developed modules. Therefore we have total freedom in creating different light installations. This project is a collaboration with the London based Carpenters Workshop gallery. The installations are limited and can be bought true them. We also produce custom installations on commission. The installations are delivered on Plexiglas so they can be easily installed and reinstalled. 5 Spare Dandelion light bulbs are included.

One module is a visible circuit with 3 dandelights. This module system is ease to attach to the next one (in unlimited different ways), meanwhile the power will always continue correctly true the installation. So it is possible to create a composition from just a few, up to 500 modules, according to the space and atmosphere.

Fragile Future III is far less fragile then Fragile Future I and II. Therefore easy to install and maintain. Both Fragile Future I, II and III are limited and built by our company.

GHOST COLLECTION

We asked our self : can we make a real life size image of our futuristic chair designs in real life?We found a technique that could create this image in Plexiglas, After figuring out how to use this on a big 3D object our chairs came into existence. The inner shapes visible when light reflects on them are formed by millions of air bubbles contributing to it's name. ... Ghost Chair.

Ghost Chair shows the future feeling of a chair that does not really exist yet. Nobody is just normal and straight however it sometimes looks like we are, even a chair has its extraordinary sides. Straight from the outside, but curved and wrinkled and impossible to excist from the inside. The Ghost Chair is a futuristic concept of a chair, 3-dimensionally captured within the boundaries of reality. Inside the chair are miljoens of air bubbles forming the inner shape witch contributed to it's name.

It gives you a dramatic feeling: unbelievable and high-tech, but beautiful! DRIFT sketches an image of a chair that cannot exist yet... But with today's techniques it becomes real. By doing this they deliberate their design from the trend of stereotypical forms. Nowadays anything is possible with 3D - computer programs -you can even draw the impossible - so why fall back on the awkward design language of your grandma’s furniture With the GHOST Collection, Nauta and Gordijn want to make clear that it is time to start designing our own future!

The chairs are handmade with the best materials and specialists from Europe. Two different techniques were combined in a new way to create the GHOST chair. The inner ghost looks random, but in fact every line has been designed. We tried to generate the most 3-Dimensional shapes possible, that doesn't refer to any other shapes at all. We wanted them to look new and never seen before but also natural at the same time. The possibilities of creating a shape like this is unlimited within the boundaries of the material. The Ghost Chair is an experiment in: shape, high tech production methods and crafts.

The collection exists of 8 table chairs, two different arm chairs: the Queen chair, the King chair, and a stool. The initial concept behind these particular pieces comes from the old times when Kings reigned their kingdoms. The first chair was actually a throne for the King. Only the King was allowed to sit down. The other guests had to remain standing as a sign of decency. Only during fancy dinners people were allowed to sit. All the chairs in the dining room were part of one collection, but from the shape you could see the social position. Of course the King’s chair was the biggest and together with the Queens chair, the only chairs with armrests. The guests at the table could sit on simple chairs with only a backrest. The waiters sat on stools against the wall, ready to jump up to server the King.

The GHOST collection consists of 11 items and will be produced in a limited edition of 8 and 2 RP. In future we would like to add a few items to the collection, we are thinking about a table, lamp and a closet, using the same technique.

DANDELIGHT

Dandelight is a little luminous dandelion. This little piece of real nature lightens up by batteryfood. The real dandelion seeds are one by one connected to te L.E.D.

The Dandelight tells the story about the amalgamation of nature and technology. In the distant future these two opposites have made a pact to survive. Dandelight combines a electronic circuit and real dandelions in a little light sculpture.

OIL LIGHT

Oil is used in a lot of materials and products around us. The price of a drum oil is getting higher all the time because of the rapidly slinking oil reserves.Instead of consuming less, the world population is being motivated to buy more oil basedproducts to stimulate the economy, we think that's strange.

Oil Light is an unique lamp made out of nylon, an oil based material. The size of the lamp is directly related to the oilprice. When the oilprice rises, one can buy less oil for the same price. Therefore the lamp you can buy will be smaller when the oil price is high and bigger when it is low. When the oil price is 100 dollars for a barrel, the lamp will be build up from 100 little drums. One dollar change on the oil market = one oil drum in the lamp less or more. We use a widget to check the oil price constantly. This is directly related to the size of the lamp you can order.

WATER WEB BENCH

This sofa for outside or inside use, came into being as a loveseat. People in love are always playing and teasing each other. Sitting on this bench you can play with the water as much as you like and the water plays with you and the bench.

Water is pumped up from inside the bench to the seat and flows through the milling cutted pattern back into the sofa. Sometimes it flows underneath the person that sits on the bench. In the sunshine, the sparkling of the water is a contrast with the matt coating of the bench.

There are three different patterns and 6 different colours. Other colours on request.
Water Web Bench is the first product that Ralph Nauta and Lonneke Gordijn designed together, so a true loveseat!

FRAGILE FUTURE II

Fragile Future II tells the story about the amalgamation of nature and technology. In the distant future these two extremes have made a pact to survive. Fragile Future II combines an electronical system with real dandelions in a lightsculpture that is predestined to overgrow a surface.

One module is a visible circuit with four dandelights. This module system is ease to attach to the next one (in seven different ways),twhile the switch-leg will continue. So it is possible to create a composition from just a few, up to 50 modules, according to the space and atmosphere.

Fragile Future II is also a limited installation with a far less fragile electrical system then Fragile Future I. Therefore easier to built and install. Both Fragile Future I and II are built by the designer Lonneke Gordijn, for info and rates please send her a mail to lonneke@designdrift.nl.

FRAGILE FUTURE I

Limited Edition of 200 Modules for around 8 installations.

Fragile Future tells the story about the amalgamation of nature and technology. In the distant future these two extremes have made a pact to survive. Fragile Future combines an electronical system with real dandelions in a lightsculpture that is predestined to overgrow a surface. Electronics are driven by the natural survival instincts.

The fragile installation protects itself by pretending to be out of order when someone comes too close (optional). This is the same mechanism as a poppy that drops its petal when you pick it, or a ladybird that acts as dead in your hand when caught.

GHOST COLLECTION RENDERINGS

After 1,5 years of hard work our Ghost Collection has finally been released in Milan at the Salone del Mobile, 2008 as an limited edition.

We designed futuristic concepts of chairs that can not exist yet. By doing this we captured the Future ghosts of our imagination. Combining two new production techniques, we are able to design every possible shape the human brain can imagine.

MODULE KITCHEN

The Module Kitchen can be used the way a kitchen was meant to be: small animals can be skinned and cleaned after hunting, cutting vegetables can be done straight on the surface.
Cooking is not clean, it is a rough, messy and precise adventure, that needs the right equipment. The Module Kitchen is for people who enjoy the basic necessities in life. Each kitchen function is a seperate module, so you can decide for yourself how to build your own kitchen. The different modules can be placed in may different ways, against a wall or free in a space, even outside. And you can change the setup all the time, because they are not unmovable build into a house. If you move to a new place, the kitchen can come with you!

We presented our Ghost Collection in our first solo exhibition during the Salona del Mobile in Milan. It was a great success! Drift has officially been launched as an Dutch Design company capable of designing and fabricating our own collections.

Together with Ann Maes we organized an exposition for the group 22+2. This group is a selection of Ann Maes and Richard Hutten to Design a children's chair with a double function. This expo was an introduction of the group. Next year we hope to present the 22+2 chairs to the public.

A voting machine for the Dirk Roosenburg price 2007. This is an award for architects in Eindhoven. The public could vote on the their favorite bilding.

BEWOGEN

Bewogen door tiijd en ruimte (Moved by time and Space) is a multidisciplinary exhibition filled with
movement, illusion and craftsmanship. Product design, fasion and food design are encircled by animation and sound design. The varying disciplines meet in a dialogue with each other and with the space of this former head office of Philips.

All designs show movement, some literally, some in their presentation. Others suggest movement and some move the public.
